Landmark Maternal Health Boost from the  Amsons Group’s grant

Lack of adequate ante- & post-natal maternal mothers and children care has been a bane in the Kenya healthcare sector leading to hundreds of deaths of both mother and their children. Consequently, the Kenya Government has been making efforts to construct hospital in far-flung and remote areas and also in informal settlements near urban centers in the country.

It is therefore quite inspiring to learn that ten Mother-&-Child hospitals will be constructed in the country in the next three years in efforts to help and serve over 1 million underserved women. In one of the largest-ever private-sector-financed boost to prevent maternal deaths, Amsons Group will fully finance the construction and equipping of the ten facilities with about K sh KSh 4.5 billion (B) (US$ 35 million -M), under a Build, Equip, and Transfer (BoT) model. This landmark corporate grant to the Kenyan Government was confirmed on April 29th, 2026 in Nairobi.

The level-4 medical facilities, fully funded by the Amsons Group will be constructed over three fiscal years: 2026/2027, 2027/2028, and 2028/2029.

A Letter of Intent (LOI) between the Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Health, and Amsons Group, was recently signed at State House, Nairobi where Kenya’s President H.E. President William Ruto welcomed and appreciated the corporate social investment initiative, dubbed the Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza project.

H.E. President Ruto termed the firm’s philanthropic support in advancing Kenya’s maternal health goals as a timely major national milestone. In the company of Amsons Group CEO Mr Edha Nahdi and Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Hon Aden Duale, President Ruto affirmed that reducing maternal and newborn deaths is a national priority especially given statistics that indicate that 5,000 children and 3,600 mothers die at delivery in the country and where 26 counties are currently identified as high-burden maternal death counties.

The President confirmed that the country has, over the last three years, undertaken the most ambitious health system transformation efforts since independence. He affirmed that the support by Amsons Group will help deepen ongoing health infrastructure expansion under the national Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) project.

The Government, through the Ministry of Health, he said, intends to implement the HSS Project, which intends to increase the number of adequately equipped health facilities, especially at level 4 and 5, to serve as the first point of access for inpatient care, critical referral & specialized care, and also support emergency and critical services in addition to offering advanced diagnostics and treatment.

The development and equipping of the ten new facilities, each with a 250-bed capacity, will help alleviate the plight of more than 1 million women seeking pre- and postnatal care in remote and rural locations.

The government, through the Ministry of Health and the respective county governments will provide the necessary support, including staffing and medical supplies.

“The support by Amsons Group, a corporate investor in Kenya which has links with both the Bamburi Cement Plc and East Africa Portland Cement, is a timely intervention. With the support, the government will be in a better position to guarantee maternal health and curb maternal and newborn mortality as part of our national development agenda,” President Ruto affirmed.

“The Government of Kenya deeply appreciates the support of Mr Edha Nahdi and Amsons Group, first by choosing Kenya as an investment destination and secondly for their devotion to share in our social development through health care systems transformation,”President Ruto added.

Amsons Group MD Mr Edha Nahdi confirmed the over US$3.5 million assistance as part of the Group’s shared prosperity social investment goals.

The Amsons Group, he said, currently holds a controlling stake in 16 market-leading firms in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Bamburi Cement and East African Portland Cement Plc (EAPC), and will continue to support development programs as part of the firm’s social investment agenda.

“Amsons Group and its 16 subsidiaries operate in more than seven countries in Africa under a treasured shared prosperity model. Under this model, we are committed to playing a key part in Kenya’s first-world transformation journey,” Mr Nahdi said.

According to him the Amsons Group is a responsible corporate citizen who is delighted to share in the government’s obligation to ensure that maternal and newborn deaths are reduced. “In this project, the Group is not merely building hospitals but also helping in advancing healthcare delivery in Kenya,” he averred.

The ten target counties for the Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza facilities include Nairobi (2), Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot.
