Which is the CONSCIOUSNESS age? ..
In recent times, i have heard it said that teenagers’ brains mature fully after the age of 25 years..
…..
….my question may be neither here nor there but in my everyday reflections, I think consciousness or the ability to know what is happening in one’s environment and to be alert and ‘conscious’ is a complex thing/Issue…
From my childhood, for instance, I always have fleeting memories of the time I spent with our loving dad as he repaired his vehicle and in our conversations, he would tell me that work or task is termed ‘Ngugi’ in the Kimeru language.
When I was about 9 years, I fleetingly recall the moments when my 5th born sister was born and her and my mother were discharged from hospital and brought home by dad.. .
There was much joy after this birth and even later when my maternal grandmother after whom my sister was named came over to visit.
When i was in class 3, I fleetingly recall that we had a teacher called Gathee, a short study, elderly man who mainly taught us Kiswahili and who rode his then gazelle bicycle to school daily.
He is the person who insisted that I repeat class (standard) 3, (i guess he was a friend to my dad’s brother) a development that changed the course of my primary school tenure (story for another day).
I also have fleeting memories of fear & panic.
When we were in class 5B(Botswana–I am trying to recall what that B stood for), one of our school mates died and when the news reached us, a sober mood immediately engulfed us especially those who knew the boy and whose mom was a very good friend of our late Cucu Rebecca (our maternal grandmother) and a distant relative.. .
This is also the time I experienced how panic attacks and stampede work out.
… In class 7L (7 Libya), an electric power fault would sometimes happen leading sparks and then to screams and panic in the class and in other classes nearby as the pupils struggled, immediately, from behind their desks and chairs to scamper out to safety. Consequently, we would all scramble towards the door as each tried to escape almost leading to stampedes. These terrible memories are still rather fresh yet faint in my mind.
But why question the CONSCIOUSNESS- age idea & concept interest and probe???
CONSCIOUSNESS as a life reality really amazes me daily.. .
For instance, my dad (as a tour – guide driver – – he used to share with me that he was strict and tough with tourists–especially foreign visitors–who could get nagging and difficult if given chances) passed away in 1993, after returning from a tour of the Amboseli national Park and then traveling all the way to Kisumu and back in a then quite popular tourists’ itinerary…..
It is while driving back that he got a headache and visited a doctor who gave him drugs but he reached home still sickly and after presenting some chicken (meat) gift to us and sitting for a few minutes in the sitting room retired to bed.
A few days later, he got very sick and was admitted to hospital where he could hardly talk (he was kind of bubbling words) or sit & where he was diagnosed with cerebral malaria and passed on shortly after (this was in late July 1993).
But despite God’s grace and continuing healing in this bereavement journey (this have kept I and my siblings strong and hopeful) I, today, still ‘see’ him and my mom also (she passed in in 2005) in the elderly people i meet daily and whom my subconscious mind always tells me could be my parents’ age.
Immediately I meet such people (especially those who appear neat, smart, humble, kind and loving as my parents were or are – – their spirits still live), I feel attracted or rather close to them and even at times make efforts to say hello.
Moreover, whenever I meet strangers who resemble people i love, like or admire, I also immediately feel attracted to the strangers and even feel close to the strangers this making me wonder about this CONSCIOUSNESS wonder, marvel and power.
And though I am often not able to talk to such strangers, I feel satisfied ….
.. It is like I have, at least, seen people who remind me of some of my past and some people that I like and love and have not seen in a while or a long time…

.
Still marveling at the CONSCIOUSNESS wonder, I also often wonder whether toddlers and even young children possibly below age 10 and who lose parents and beloved family members and friends at these tender ages are really able to remember the departed in their lives once in a while or when some situations occur like happens in my adult life.
