More Benefits, Better User Experience:

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for higher hygiene standards and the pains of people having to daily wash dishes and clothes in the then lockdown which had also forced many of the people to  release their house helps back to their own (house helps) homes caused a surge in washing and dishwashing machines sales,” explained Jane Kariuki LG Electronics E Africa Regional Head of Marketing  in Nairobi on October 29th during the unveiling of a new range of energy efficient and water -saving dishwashers . The range includes stand-alone models XD2, XD4 Auto Open Dry & build-in model XD4 being marketed under the slogan ‘Goodbye Scrubbing, Hello Living’. The two stand-alone units are in Matte Black and Platinum Silver. “As consumers look for convenience and which allows them more time to tackle other pressing tasks and as lifestyles evolve, dishwashers are no longer luxury equipment,” Kariuki appreciated emphasizing LG’s commitment to aligning innovation with local relevance.

LG Best Care Trailer Image 1 300x200According to LG the launch comes at a critical juncture in the region’s domestic technology landscape. Kenya’s urban population has already grown to nearly one third of the entire population, driven by rural-to-urban migration and demographic shifts, according to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). With more dual-income households and smaller living spaces, the demand for smart, compact, and time-saving home appliances is at an all-time high.

The newly launched range incorporates the quad wash system and LG’s flagship TrueSteam technology, which uses high-temperature steam to ensure the elimination of stubborn stains and less water spots on glasses, offering a superior level of hygiene. In the past, hand-washing of dishes has been advocated as a better option for stubborn stains removal but this technology has now debunked this belief. Combined with the Auto Open Dry feature, which automatically opens the door after the wash cycle to aid drying, these machines ensure spotless, moisture-free dishes without manual intervention. This feature also significantly reduces energy consumption by eliminating the need for heated drying cycles.

According to LG, the models have been designed with energy conservation in mind. Kenyan consumers can expect up to 566% lower water usage compared to manual dishwashing, a particularly important feature in a country where many urban households report concerns about water reliability. Electricity consumption is also optimized through inverter technology that adjusts usage based on load size, contributing to lower utility bills, a growing concern for middle-class families in the current inflationary environment.

LG’s Home Solutions Product Marketing Manager for East Africa & Head of Go-to-Market, Peter Wanjohi, emphasized the versatility of the range. “These dishwashers are designed to blend into Kenyan homes and lives, with the built-in options fit for space-conscious layouts, customization and colors blending and the freestanding variants for households that need flexibility.”

LG Image 3 300x216Nevertheless, industry analysts indicate that the east Africa Community regional market for dishwashers is still in its infancy. Yet, Kenya has emerged as a key growth market, driven by increasing urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and shifting attitudes toward domestic labor and time management. LG’s move to localize its dishwasher offering, positions the company to lead this fast-growing segment.

In Kenya, LG has seen double-digit growth in its home appliances division for three consecutive years, with expectations that the new dishwasher line will accelerate this momentum.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. All three models meet European Union energy efficiency standards and are built using recyclable components and materials designed to reduce environmental impact. This aligns with Kenya’s green transition goals outlined in its Vision 2030 blueprint, particularly around sustainable consumption and eco-responsible urban development.

Retail partners present at the launch expressed confidence in market potential. With local distribution already underway through LG Brand Shops, online platforms, and major electronics retailers, the company is targeting both individual consumers and corporate clients such as property developers, hospitality businesses, and serviced apartment operators.

Salient points highlighted at the launch:

  • While the washing machine was launched in 1846, the dishwasher was launched in 1850 indicating people need even in that age to have a dishwashing appliance.
  • The oven was launched in 1490 way ahead of the cooker in 1820. –Other household equipment and appliances launch dates include the Microwave in 1945; the refrigerator in 1834; the radio and TV in 1920 7 1927 respectively and the apparels’ zipper and velcro in 1913 & 1954 respectively. The dishwasher is up to 26 per cent better in cleaning than hands.
  • Dishwashers have different cleaning cycles with some having a one-hour express cleaning  cycle using only one-tenth of water compared to hand washing of utensils.
  • The recently introduced premium and platinum dishwashers are using 9.5 litres and 9.9 litres of water per cycle saving much more that would be used in efficient hand -washing of dishes.
  • -Though the dishwashers are baby utensil safe, they are not ideal for aluminum ‘sufurias’ cleaning given that aluminum gets discolored by hot water.
  • The dishwashers could appear initially expensive but when eventually in use a lot is saved in terms of time, water and energy. They generally provide gentler care and reduce odor incidences..
  • The appliances have a dual zone feature enabling one to clean dishes at specific components or points of their choice.
  • Using the quad system, which has four arms, and the true-steam function and turbo cleaning, their efficiency and effectiveness is assured and they are silent and with the LG invertor drive motor also ensuring less electric power consumption/usage.
  •  The XD4 Auto Open Dry ensures door opening once the cleaning cycle ends this enhancing natural drying and saving power despite the fact that the premium model dishwashers also have the heat dry function technology that circulates hot air for faster dish drying.
  • The dishwashers are manufactured under the minimalism design concept and incorporate the LG ThinQ technology that can control the appliances including commanding more cycles remotely even from smart phones.

Meanwhile LG Electronics East Africa on September 5th 2025 in Nairobi unveiled LG Best Care Trailer, a 40-foot mobile customer support unit designed to deliver technical assistance and repairs directly to consumers across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and potentially Zambia.

LG Best Care Trailer Image 2 300x200According to revelations provided at the launch event, the mobile unit is fully equipped with diagnostic tools, spare parts, and a team of skilled technicians trained to handle a wide range of LG products, from home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines to electronics including televisions and audio systems. While customers can have their products assessed, minor repairs can also be completed on-site, and with clients receiving guidance on proper usage and maintenance, without having to visit a service centre.

But beyond free service campaigns, the LG Best Care Trailer is also multi-purpose. It features a moving LED billboard, a stage with sound and lighting capabilities for talent showcases, and serves as a platform for customer and community engagement activities across Kenya and the wider East African region.

“We understand that for many Kenyans, accessing centralized service points can be time-consuming and costly, especially in busy cities like Nairobi. The LG Best Care Trailer brings expert support directly to our customers’ doorsteps, saving them time and ensuring their appliances continue to function efficiently,” said Donghun Lee, President LG Electronics East Africa.

According to Kenya’s National Bureau of Statistics, Nairobi is home to over 4.5 million residents, with approximately 70 per cent relying on public transportation modes. As many households increasingly invest in mid- to high-end appliances, convenience in after-sales care has become a growing concern. LG’s initiative seeks to bridge that gap by decentralizing service delivery and reducing turnaround times.

“At LG, customer satisfaction does not end at the point of sale but continues across the lifetime of the products through reliable, responsive after-care. The LG Best Care Trailer reflects this commitment to ensuring that customers attain maximum benefits from their investment,” said Ronald Mitei, the Service Director at LG Electronics East Africa.

While mobile service models are common in sectors like telecom and banking across Africa, LG’s adaptation for the electronics sector could set a new standard. The company plans to roll out the LG Best Care Trailer to other major towns such as Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru, and extend it to markets in Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia, following a pilot period in Nairobi.

And on September 26th, 2025 the company also officially launched its premium LG ARTCOOL Air Conditioner (AC) in Nairobi at one of its major showrooms at Kenrail Towers, (Westlands, Nairobi). The AC is meant to redefine cooling in Kenyan homes and offices. The ARTCOOL combines cutting-edge inverter technology with elegant design, delivering up to 70 per cent energy savings, 40 per cent faster cooling, and ultra-quiet performance. It also features smart controls through LG ThinQ, enabling remote operation and energy monitoring via smartphone.

This is designed to meet the needs of Kenya’s style-conscious and tech-savvy consumers, and is positioned as a lifestyle product that blends seamlessly into modern living spaces while offering superior performance.

Yet on August 28th, 2025 LG introduced the LG InstaView Bottom Freezer refrigerator to the Kenyan market, presenting it as a practical solution to food waste, one of the region’s most pressing challenges.

At the launch event in Nairobi, Donghun Lee, President of LG East Africa, described the new refrigerator as a product designed with African households in mind, where high electricity costs and power outages often limit access to reliable refrigeration.

LG Image 2 1 300x216Studies show that nearly 40 per cent of the food produced on the continent suffers post-harvest loss before it reaches the table, with inadequate storage cited as a key factor.

“This product responds to the realities of African families who need food to last longer and who are also conscious of their energy use. While groceries remain fresh for up to seven days, the fridge consumes less power than its other brand equivalents, this helping to reduce waste and deliver more value for every shilling spent,” Lee said.

The new 349-litre model incorporates LG’s InstaView panel, which lights up the interior with two knocks, allowing users to check contents without opening the door and losing cold air. Other innovations include advanced cooling technologies that maintain even temperatures across every shelf; a Smart Inverter Compressor that lowers energy consumption while enhancing durability, and full integration with the LG ThinQ app, which enables remote monitoring and maintenance alerts.

For LG, the launch is both an expansion of its product line and a statement of intent.

“Innovation is only meaningful when it makes life better. This product is a direct reflection of that philosophy by combining functionality, style, and sustainability,” affirmed marketing head Kariuki.

The LG InstaView Bottom Freezer refrigerator, which carries ENERGY STAR certification, is designed to ensure that every hour confers less strain on both grid and off-grid power supplies and can be bought at LG/Opalnet brand shops, and at partner outlets, including  Hotpoint Appliances, and leading supermarkets countrywide.
