Kakuzi breaks ground for new Blueberry production orchards

Venturing into new business streams not only indicates a firm’s commitment to growth and expansion but also a dedication to innovation. Firms’ determination for better growth helps in ensuring better returns for shareholders and also offers better prospects for the market and such firms’ publics including local and international consumers.

Such dedication and drive is evidenced  in the recent breaking of ground by listed agribusiness firm Kakuzi Plc. The firm essentially broke the ground of and on a 30-acre greenhouse development as part of its Blueberry crop production strategy.

As afore-stated, the Blueberry greenhouse development is also part of Kakuzi’s revenue stream diversification plan and formally marks the adoption of a third super-food commercial crop alongside Macadamia and Avocado.

On September 9th, 2026, Kakuzi Plc MD Mr Chris Flowers confirmed the greenhouse development project commencement, and affirmed that the blueberry pilot project had registered tremendous success at the crop variety selection stage.

The firm’s crop trials, he confirmed, had returned positive results, including commercial viability, as reflected in the Kakuzi Plc divisional half-year trading results.

“Kakuzi has been actively working to diversify its revenue streams, and our blueberry operations are part of this foundation,” Mr Flowers averred. He added; “our blueberry production has increased in tandem with expectations. This venture is now profitable and has recorded a half-year profit of K sh 13 million (M), recovering from the K sh 17 M loss posted for the same period last year.”

Based on the good performance, and to boost shareholder returns, the firm is now developing purpose-built greenhouses across the 30-acre orchard as part of the blueberry production venture.

As of June 2026, Kakuzi blueberry production on the pilot orchards stood at 42,000 kg, up from 8,400 kg in a similar period in 2025.

“We anticipate that production will meet our annual field production and business revenue projections. The market demand both domestically and in our key international markets remains strong, with prices exceeding expectations,” Mr Flowers noted.

As part of Kakuzi’s super-foods commercialization strategy, the firm is also exploring value addition for its produce such as producing long-life avocado products, including frozen pulp and oil production for export markets. /ends/
