For how long shall ignorance ruin our spaces, our earth, our lives?

From around 9pm to around 10.30 pm, in areas such Dagoretti South near ‘Car wash’ & ‘Kwanganga Flats’, entrepreneurs get busy trying to shut their businesses so that they can retire to their homes.
For some, shutting for the day is a simple process of gathering products and items from outside their shops and into the shops and orderly arranging the products so that they can fit in the often small and squeezed spaces.
For others, and especially small motorcycles shops and garages, shutting the businesses is much more that returning the products inside their shops and spaces.
After finally shutting the doors, these garages and shops operators get more busy amassing the day’s solid waste & garbage that includes hard & soft plastics, discarded plastic and metal cans & containers and even discarded helmets and other motor cycles discarded parts such as gaskets & motor cycles tubes & tires.
Once they have amassed the ‘garbage’, these entrepreneurs set the garbage on fires which are further fuelled by the oil split during the day and covering most of parts of the garbage.

Consequently, at this time one can see flames of fire flickering at intervals of about 100 meters and walking or being near such places is real torture given that pungent smells and fumes from the fires fill the area almost choking passers by.
Evidently ignorant of the harm that the smoke and fumes are causing to mother earth and the attendant health risk to human beings, animals and plants, the garbage burners possibly think that they are performing patriotic duties of burning and ridding their spaces of garbage and solid waste.
As I took a walk on the Feb 19th, 2026 late evening after alighting from a PSV two stages prior to my proper stage in an efforts to count more of walking step, I incidentally noticed that a police land cruiser was around the area perhaps patrolling the area despite being parked by the roadside near a pub..
Nobody seemed bothered with the fires lit in the area and it occurred to me that perhaps our law enforcement officers need to be more alert…
Such fires near our roads and residential areas evidently present a risk of the fire spreading beyond where they are lit..
Perhaps our law enforcement and order – keeping officers should be more conscious about air pollution from such fires and then make efforts to enlighten citizens to stop lighting needless fires and instead dispose of the solid garbage in the right spaces..
