A stellar performance at the 2026 Magical Kenya Open

Mr Njoroge Kibugu is one among Kenya’s top professional golfers. During the February 2026 Magical Kenya Open (MKO) Golf tournament, Mr Kibugu performed remarkably well, a reality that earned him recognition and appreciation from among others Absa Bank Kenya, one of the event main sponsors. Consequently, Absa rewarded him with a K sh 2 million cash prize, it was confirmed on March 25th, 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya

Remarkably, Mr Kibugu was the sole Kenyan who made it in cutting to the final round by delivering a highly competitive performance against a field of highly competitive golfers from over 30 countries. A stellar performance on round two that ended with a spectacular eagle at hole 18 sealed his cut. He followed in the footsteps of his brother Mr Mutahi Kibugu who made the cut in 2023. Mr Kibugu finished the tournament by playing a blemish free round of 65 on the final day, hitting five birdies and earning a total score of 6 par under overall.

At the cheque handover ceremony at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi and where the event was also hosted, Absa Bank Kenya’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director, Ms Mwihaki Wachira, affirmed that the bank remains committed to supporting local talent and creating platforms that enable Kenyan athletes to thrive on the global stage.

“Through our continued partnership with the Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) and other stakeholders in the sports ecosystem, we are proud to support the growth of golf in Kenya and across the region. And notably, Njoroge’s performance is a testament to the immense potential we have locally. We are thus delighted to recognize and support his journey as he competes at the highest level,” she said.

On his part, Kibugu expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that the support will play a significant role in advancing his professional career.

“I would like to thank Absa for this cash reward which will help towards my development on the Sunshine Tour this season, running from April 15th 2026 to March 2027. One of my goals is to win one Sunshine Tour and finish top 20 of the Order of Merit as no Kenyan has won on the Sunshine Tour. I am very excited about this and there is a lot to look forward to. I cannot wait for the next Magical Kenya Open,” Kibugu celebrated.

In total, Absa Bank Kenya invested K sh 65 million into the 2026 MKO Golf Tournament, cementing its position as the presenting partner and largest private sector sponsor of the prestigious golf tournament for the 15th consecutive year from 19th to 22nd February 2026 at the prestigious Karen Country Club.

In addition to Absa’s reward, Mr Kibugu also received a further K sh 5 M from the Kenyan government in recognition of his achievement and to support his continued development. The 22-year-old now proceeds on tour in the Sunshine Tour in South Africa, a ticket he secured through his top spot in the East Africa Swing of the Sunshine Development Tour.
