New Operational Benchmark for East Africa’s Insurance Sector courtesy of AAR Insurance
Insurance penetration rates in most of Africa continue to be low with Kenya’s penetration having remained at below 3 per cent of the general population for many years. Many factors have been given for the low penetration rates including low financial literacy with regards to the importance of insurance in providing security and safety for populations and also in generating pools of funds that can spur national socio-economic development. Dire poverty levels are also seen in low incomes and less disposable income among many citizens is also a factor blamed among others.
Yet, Kenya’s insurance industry is currently undergoing a defining and momentous season; there is increasing need for better compliance to the industry’s regulatory frameworks and better standards with regards to products design and customer service. Essentially regulators across Eastern Africa are enforcing stricter compliance standards as led by the Kenya’s Insurance Regulatory Authority’s (IRA) Risk-Based Capital (RBC) framework, Market Conduct Guidelines, and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner’s (ODPC) sector-specific guidelines.
And in tandem with the development, AAR Insurance has officially been awarded the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) Certification following exhaustive, independent Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits across its regional operations, it was confirmed in Nairobi on September 17th, 2026.
The accreditation is conducted by global certification body Bureau Veritas alongside its implementation partner Ace Analytiq, and establishes an internationally audited operating standard for policy underwriting, claims adjudication, consumer data privacy, and governance.

By embedding ISO 9001:2015 into its core operating architecture, AAR Insurance is directly addressing these new operational and regulatory requirements. The ISO 9001:2015 is an internationally recognized QMS standard that specifies requirements for an organization to consistently provide services that meet customers’ and applicable legal and regulatory requirements through disciplined, audited processes.
Built on the core principles of risk-based thinking, process-driven execution, leadership governance and continuous improvement, the framework codifies every internal workflow into a repeatable, accountable system designed to eliminate process waste, prevent operational errors, and elevate service speed at the point of customer need.
At the official certification handover ceremony, AAR Insurance CEO and Principal Officer, Mr. Justine Kosgei, affirmed that the achievement of the ISO 9001:2015 certification concretizes the company’s promise to the market. “Behind every AAR Insurance policy lies an audited, world-class operational engine. And by standardizing our processes, we have cut outpatient approvals to 10 minutes and inpatient admissions to 30 minutes, proving that a digital-first, purpose-led insurance model is the most resilient engine to close East Africa’s protection gap,” Mr Kosgei averred.
Given the fact that AAR Insurance is scaling and expanding in Eastern Africa namely in transitioning AAR General Insurance Uganda Limited into a fully licensed non-life underwriter and entering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the ISO 9001:2015 acts as a standardized operational blueprint, ensuring consistent service quality across borders.
At the same event, Mr Hosea Kiprop, the AAR Insurance Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) appreciated the ISO 9001:2015 certification as a vital risk management shield. “Our operational discipline de-risks our business and supports our adoption of the global IFRS S1 (General Sustainability) and IFRS S2 (Climate Disclosures) standards. Our focus on operational efficiency has delivered a 60 per cent reduction in paper consumption, driven a 12 per cent drop in administrative overheads, and supported our ‘A Tree, A Life’ initiative, which has grown over 96,000 trees with an audited 93 per cent survival rate while creating 719 local jobs. This proves that sustainable governance builds long-term shareholder value,” explained Mr Kiprop.
The above audited workflow data also underpin AAR Insurance’s paperless access channels, including ‘AAR on the Go’, the ‘smart CBD branch at ABSA Towers’ and ‘the MyWAKALAAR mobile platform’. Notably, ‘the MyWAKALAAR’ has empowered over 10,000 intermediaries to complete agent quotation and client onboarding in less than five minutes, down from 48 hours previously.
Essentially, the AAR Insurance’s ISO 9001:2015 certification gives the over 40-year-old underwriter a solid operating base as East Africa’s insurance sector shifts towards digital, more transparent and more sustainable ways of working.
