Amazing cats’ camaraderie
In our compound, their is adult Tom cat that answers to its name ‘Rexie’.
As a male, it has been strong and lucky and has survived manges disease for several years while its partners and other kittens have died. One of its partner and sister died after being injected with a manges drug by a Vet.
In recent days, Rexie has been hanging around with the kitten in the compound. None knows how the kitten found its way into the compound since it just emerged one day and has been a constant companion of Rexie especially when Rexie is not out hunting and fighting intruders.
Notably, Rexie protects the kitten from harassment by other cats since he is known as a territorial fighter who hates seeing other male cats intrude into its territory.
Once served a meal with the kitten, Rexie leaves space for the young one to also feed or leaves the kitten to feed first.
The kitten survives outside in the cold nights and but now in the ongoing rains, Rexie has invited his kitten to shelter in an external kitchen which the two access through an opening on the floor near the door….
This is amazing love…
In reflection, I have thought that perhaps cats also have ‘ethnic’ groups and cultural norms that guide them.
Just like we have ethnic groups where men are very fond of their children and do not allow their wives to keep the children after eventualities such as separation or death and instead do all they can to have and care for the offsprings, perhaps cat families also have such practices and tendencies.
With all due respect to the Ameru & Abaluhya among other communities, I have been wondering, ‘perhaps Rexie is a Meru or Luhyia cat..’ …
… May be Rexie has tracked its female partner and snatched the kitten it is now rearing, perhaps…
