WHY ENVY is a possibility?
People and indeed institutions that appear to be running lives or activities & processes really well often tend to attract not only positive attention but also other varied reactions including envy and hatred with some of the ‘haters’ even planning harm and related distractions actions.
One only hopes that this fate does not await the enviable Murang’a County led by Governor Hon Maina Kang’ata..
On May 28th, 2026, the county formally launched a boosted internet program via Reo-Satellite technology. “All the 170 health institutions in Murang’a county will now enjoy affordable, fast and reliable internet connections courtesy of our partnership with Paratus Ltd. The publics and other institutions including universities & tertiary institutions near our health facilities will also be connected to the the fast and reliable & affordable internet once they apply to be connected,” affirmed Hon Kang’ata at the launch event at a the Muriranja hospital in Murang’a. He promised that he the Murang’a Level 5 hospital will also soon enjoy the internet after suffering from outages for long from a previous Fibre optic connection.
According to Hon Kang’ata, this is one of the only few places in the country using satellite technology. The internet application and use has enhanced not only health-care provision in Murang’a through tele – medicine but also greatly impacted other services including collection of payments.
For instance, collection of ‘own- source’ revenue from licenses fees and taxation among other sources improved from about Ksh 500 million before automation to Ksh 1.6 billion annually currently.
Paratus Ltd Kenya (guided by its maxim ‘Always Prepared’ is a subsidiary of the Paratus Group, South Africa and which provides Starlink internet.
Mr Martin…… of Paratus Group South Africa termed satellite internet as very fast & reliable.
“Starlink internet is currently live in 10 African countries. We’re keen to connect businesses in sectors such as health-care, education, other private sector operations and even government departments. We’re especially keen to boost health-care and have approached 16 African countries so far to use our internet. Starlink Reo-Satellite internet is available anywhere and only requires a power source and a Starlink terminal,” expounded Mr Martin……..
Starlink has recently been authorized to operate in Uganda and is live in Rwanda, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, DRC, Angola, Namibia and South Africa serving about 500 million people currently… .
As opposed to Satellite internet, Fibre optic internet is quite expensive to roll out especially outside towns and cities. As cellular technology, fibre internet bandwidth is limited as opposed to satellite internet which has huge capacity.
“At Paratus, we’re proud and privileged to help in driving ICT penetration in Africa and if possible to avail internet to all Africans. Our view is that availability of internet should also now be a human right given the rapid growth of ICT in the world,” Martin further observed.
According to a Paratus Group, South Africa representative, Paratus debuted in Africa in 1999 and has been busy constructing internet infrastructure. “We’ve been connecting schools and improving right to education. In tele-medicine we’ve been connecting villages to reliable clinics in towns and other urban centers. We love Kenya and we gonna be here for a long while,” the rep asserted.
The event attracted other partners and dignitaries including from the USA, Israel & Slovakia embassies. A Paratus Uganda rep was also present.
Murang’a County officials at the event included ICT chair – Moses Macharia, Dr Tesi Semo(Matiba hospital superitendent), Dr Florence Kagwen( Murang’a level 5 superintendent), Dr Esther Maina (Kirwara hospital manager), & Dr Jerio Maina (Kigumo subcounty hospital) among others.
Hon Kang’ata urged Murang’a residents to encourage their children to love and study the ‘hard sciences’ namely maths, physics, chemistry and biology given the usefulness of the subjects and the potential to revolutionize Societies moving them ahead in technology and innovations. Ends
